April 22
What
is Earth Day?
A
time to be more aware of being kinder to our planet.
What
can I do?
Here
are a few ways you can get started:
Drive Less,
Drive Smart – Walk when you can. If you can’t walk, try to do trips in
a logical order so you use less gas and less time.
Switch to reusable
shopping bags – Here’s a quick comparison:
Randals
– Couldn’t find any info on their website so I called. They are priced at
.99/each (made from canvas) and thermal for $1.99/each.
HEB –
Regular price on the bags are .99/each. Earth Day Special! On Earth Day, April
22 from 3 to 7pm when you drop off at least 5 plastic bags you get a coupon
for a free reusable shopping bag. Go Here
for more details.
Kroger
– Regular bag $.99 Insulated bag $2.99 (No information on what these bags
are made of)
Whole Foods
– Small Bag $.79 Large Bag $.99 Made from 80% post consumer recycled PET
bottles which keeps the bottles from going into landfills. (Plus it’s a
really cool Sheryl Crow design)
Walmart
- $1/each and holds twice as much as a plastic bag (or at least that’s what
their website says). Made from 85% recycled material.
Change
your light bulbs – Try switching to compact fluorescent or light
emmiting diods (LED) lights. compact fluorescent light bulbs use at least
two-thirds less energy than standard incandescent bulbs to provide the same
amount of light, and they last up to 10 times longer. Compact fluorescent
light bulbs also generate 70 percent less heat, so they are safer to operate
and can reduce energy costs associated with cooling homes and offices.
Pay your
bills online – I love this one. Saves time, saves money, saves the
environment.
Eat
Locally Grown Food
Stop
Receiving Junk Mail – Go to www.optoutprescreen.com
to be removed from many mailing lists. You can also try www.stopjunk.com
and www.junkbusters.com
Plant
a Tree – After Hurricane Ike we could use more trees. :)
